A New Revival Technique for Your Ink Blending Tools: Restoring Smoothness and Functionality

Are you struggling with ink blending tools that require heavy-handed effort for smooth ink transfer? Or maybe you've experienced rough, uneven ink application—or even tools that refuse to transfer ink altogether? You're not alone. I’ve been there too, and I’m excited to share a recent discovery that completely revitalized my favorite mini ink blending tools.

My Journey with Dying Ink Blending Tools

It all started with my beloved green Mini Ink Blending Tool from Altenew. Over time, I noticed that the ink transfer became rough and sluggish. I found myself applying more and more pressure to get any ink on my project. Frustrated, I decided to wash the tool with warm, soapy water, thinking it might help. While it temporarily seemed to improve, the transfer eventually stopped altogether. To my dismay, my husband was about to toss the tool, assuming it was ruined—until I gave him a sad face, and he held back.

Weeks later, I faced a similar issue with my orange Mini Ink Blending Tool. This time, I decided to experiment differently. I washed it with plain room temperature water (no soap), then let it air dry. Unfortunately, the tool still didn’t transfer ink. I realized that perhaps some of the bristles had been damaged or lost their ink transfer ability.

The Breakthrough: Carefully Removing and Scraping the Bristles

Inspired by curiosity and frustration, I decided to try something unconventional — removing a layer of bristles from the tool. I carefully scrapped the bristles with a small knife, testing the ink transfer process repeatedly.

The first few scrapings resulted in rough, uneven ink transfer, but I was encouraged—they were starting to transfer ink more consistently. I continued scraping and trimming until I finally achieved the smooth ink blending I craved. The result? Even the palest inks now transfer seamlessly, giving me smooth, even coverage every time.

Visual Results and Testing

I didn’t take photos during the initial reviving process of my green tool, but I re-tested the orange one before and after scrapping:

  • Before scrapping: The ink transfer was rough and uneven, especially on detailed stencils, leaving harsh edges.
  • After scrapping: The ink flowed smoothly across the stencil with no rough edges — a total transformation!

Important Disclaimer

Please note: this is an experimental technique. Try at your own risk, as I cannot be responsible if your tool gets damaged. This method might not work for everyone, and some tools may be permanently damaged if not handled carefully.

Final Thoughts

This simple, inexpensive technique has dramatically improved my ink blending experience. If your tools are starting to act up, consider giving this a try — just proceed with caution.

Happy crafting, and I hope this revival trick helps you bring new life to your favorite ink blending tools!
