One Color, Many Possibilities: Altenew AECP Polychromatic Project

For my Altenew AECP Level 2 – Polychromatic class, the focus was all about playing with color. Since I’ve been experimenting with different color combinations in my previous classes, I decided to challenge myself with something new—a monochromatic card. This was my first time trying this approach, and I really enjoyed the process.

My Process

I started with the gorgeous Fragrant Floral Embossing Folder. After running it through my die-cutting machine to get the impression, I was inspired by one of Jennifer McGuire’s techniques. I inked up the embossing folder with Quartz Rose Fresh Dye Ink, placing the ink on the raised background. When I ran it through the die-cutting machine again, the background absorbed the ink while the raised floral images stayed white. I repeated this process a few times to build up a beautiful soft inky background.

Next, I brought in the Rose Petal Fresh Dye Ink family to stencil the flowers on the embossed image. Staying within the same color family really emphasized the monochromatic theme while still giving depth and variation.

For the leaves and flower centers, I decided to add a touch of shimmer as a neutral element. I inked them up with VersaFine Watermark Ink and heat embossed them using Ranger Snowflake Tinsel Embossing Powder. This added just the right amount of sparkle without breaking away from the monochromatic look.

Once the coloring was complete, I die cut the embossed panel with one of the Spellbinders Four Petal Label Dies. To finish, I foam-mounted the piece onto a deep burgundy cardstock from my stash, which framed the design beautifully and gave the card a polished, elegant feel.

Final Thoughts

Working with a monochromatic palette was such a fun creative stretch for me. Limiting myself to one color family helped me appreciate the subtle variations of tone, depth, and texture. The shimmer from the embossing powder was the perfect touch to elevate the card while keeping the focus on the beautiful shades of pink.
