For this class, I wanted to experiment with watercolor techniques and create a bold, artsy background. I started with the Golden Days Stamp Set and some embossing powders to build a unique base.
I began by randomly stamping the outline flower images with VersaMark Clear Ink on watercolor paper. Then, I heat embossed them with a gold glitter embossing powder I picked up from a local store. For the leaves, I stamped the solid images and heat embossed them with silver embossing powder. This gave me a custom, shiny floral background to play with.
Next, I moved on to the watercoloring. I ink-smooshed Azurite, Plum, and Midnight Violet Fresh Dye Inks onto my craft mat. Using a wet brush, I applied the colors to the flowers using a wet-on-wet watercolor technique—dropping in the ink while the petals were still damp so the colors blended naturally. I wanted the flowers to transition from blue to plum, and some flowers ended up with a two-tone effect, which I loved.
After finishing all the flowers, I decided to paint the background as well. To balance the design, I painted Azurite behind the plum flowers and Plum behind the blue flowers. For extra texture and interest, I added white paint splatters across the panel.
At this stage, I felt the background was a little too light. To intensify it, I lightly smushed Black Soot Distress Oxide Ink over the entire panel, which gave it a moody, dramatic look.
Finally, I trimmed the panel to A4 size and finished it off with a hot foiled sentiment. The shimmer of the embossing powders against the dark background really makes the flowers pop, and I love how it turned out.
